Seven people have been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice as West Yorkshire Police continue searching for two men who absconded during a child sexual offences trial in Bradford. Both men were subsequently convicted and sentenced in their absence.
Seven people have been arrested as police continue their investigation to locate two men who absconded during a child sexual offences trial in Bradford.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed that four men and three women, aged between 28 and 52, were arrested earlier this week on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.
The arrests took place at addresses in Keighley, Bingley, Birmingham and the Nelson area of Lancashire.
All seven individuals were taken into police custody before being released on conditional bail while enquiries continue.
The investigation centres on two men who failed to attend court during proceedings involving serious sexual offences.
Fayaz Ahmed, 45, from Bingley, was found guilty of two counts of rape and sentenced in his absence to seven years and six months in prison on 17 January 2025.
Imtiaz Ahmed, 61, from Keighley, was also convicted of rape in his absence on the same date and sentenced to nine years in prison.
Bench warrants were subsequently issued for both men's arrests.
Despite the convictions and prison sentences, the two men remain wanted by police, who are continuing their efforts to establish their whereabouts.
Detective Superintendent Vicky Greenbank, of Bradford District Police, said the latest arrests demonstrated the force's determination to bring both convicted offenders into custody.
She said:
"These arrests are part of our commitment to ensure that two serious sexual offenders are located and apprehended so that justice is served."
Detective Superintendent Greenbank also urged anyone with information about the whereabouts of Fayaz Ahmed or Imtiaz Ahmed to contact police.
The seven people arrested this week have not been charged, and enquiries into their suspected involvement remain ongoing.
West Yorkshire Police are appealing for information that could help officers locate the two wanted men.
