The David Hockney Gallery at Bradford's Cartwright Hall will reopen on 21 October following a major update, showcasing the celebrated artist's early works alongside later creations in a tribute to his life and legacy.
The David Hockney Gallery at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery in Bradford is set to reopen on Wednesday 21 October, following a major update celebrating the life and artistic achievements of one of the city's most famous figures.
Located in Lister Park, the gallery will feature a refreshed collection of works by the Bradford-born artist, bringing together paintings from his formative years alongside later photographic and iPad creations.
The reopening follows Hockney's death on 11 June 2026, aged 88, and will provide an opportunity for his home city to reflect on his extraordinary contribution to the art world.
The updated displays will explore Hockney's early artistic development, highlighting the influence of Bradford on the creative journey that eventually brought him international recognition.
Cartwright Hall held a particularly special place in Hockney's life. He regularly visited the gallery as a child and later recalled how important those visits had been in introducing him to original paintings.
The dedicated David Hockney Gallery first opened in 2017 to mark the artist's 80th birthday.
More recently, Cartwright Hall played a prominent role in Bradford's year as UK City of Culture, hosting the Turner Prize exhibition and attracting more than 80,000 visitors.
The gallery space also hosted Neo Fauna, an exhibition by artist and comedian Jim Moir, better known as Vic Reeves, which attracted more than 40,000 visits.
Councillor Ian Walker, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Neighbourhoods and Communities, said the city was proud to care for such an important collection of Hockney's work.
He described the reopening as an opportunity for visitors to discover where the story of one of Britain's greatest artists began.
The David Hockney Gallery will reopen to the public on Wednesday 21 October 2026.
