Twelve-year-old Supratit Banerjee has made British chess history, breaking a record that stood for 22 years despite beginning his journey with limited coaching and resources.
A 12-year-old schoolboy from Sutton in South London has become Britain's youngest-ever International Chess Master, breaking a national record that had stood for more than two decades.
Supratit Banerjee, a pupil at Sutton Grammar School, achieved the prestigious title at just 12 years old, surpassing the previous record of 13 years and two months.
That milestone was previously achieved by Luke McShane in 1997 and David Howell in 2004.
The International Master title is one of the highest honours in competitive chess, sitting just below Grandmaster status.
From Glasgow to international success
Supratit's achievement is particularly remarkable given the challenges he faced while developing his chess skills.
His journey began in Glasgow, where he had limited access to specialist coaching, resources and competitive opportunities.
His family later moved to London, where they continued navigating the competitive chess world while Supratit balanced his education and preparation for his 11-plus examinations.
Despite these challenges, his determination and natural ability helped him progress rapidly.
Supratit earned his first International Master norm, a recognised measure of exceptional tournament performance, when he was just 11 years old.
Achieving the full International Master title requires players to demonstrate consistently high performance across multiple tournaments, including securing three qualifying norms covering at least 27 games and meeting the relevant rating requirement.
Family celebrates extraordinary achievement
Supratit's mother, Pooja Banerjee, described her son's journey as one of perseverance, dedication and family sacrifice.
She explained that neither parent initially had extensive knowledge of chess or how to navigate its competitive pathways.
The family had to learn about the sport's development opportunities while supporting Supratit's ambitions.
Pooja said:
"Through it all, Supratit's determination, clear goals and positivity have kept him moving forward with a smile. We are immensely proud of how far he has come — and this is just the beginning."
Praise from English Chess Federation
The English Chess Federation has congratulated Supratit on his historic achievement, praising his skill and hard work.
A spokesperson said the youngster has a "wonderful future ahead of him in the game".
Supratit already represents England internationally and has competed in tournaments featuring Grandmasters and International Masters.
His latest achievement places him among a relatively small group of elite players worldwide to hold the International Master title.
A new generation of British chess talent
Supratit's success follows another remarkable achievement by young British chess player Bodhana Sivanandan, from Harrow.
In 2025, Bodhana made headlines after becoming the youngest female player to defeat a Grandmaster.
She has since achieved the title of Woman Grandmaster, becoming Britain's youngest holder of that title.
Both achievements highlight the growing success of young British chess players on the international stage.
For Supratit, the latest milestone could be another step towards the ultimate ambition of becoming a Chess Grandmaster.
