New Figures Show Fewer Bradford 5 Year Olds With Dental Decay

Bradford Council has welcomed the latest figures from Public Health England which show the number of 5-year-olds with tooth decay has fallen.

The trend in the district is in line with the national oral health survey results which continues to see a downward trend.

The pattern of dental health improvement among the age group shows the impact parents and carers can have in establishing good dental care habits from an early age.

Cllr Val Slater, Bradford Council's Deputy Leader and portfolio holder for health and wellbeing, said: "It is important children in Bradford get the best start in life and that includes making sure they have healthy teeth.

"That’s why improving the oral health of children in the district is a key public health priority that we share with NHS England, dental practices, Public Health England and the Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust.

"The latest Public Health England report confirms that we are making progress and, whilst oral health of young children in the district remains poor, we are heading in the right direction.

"The percentage of 5-year-olds with dental decay has reduced from 46% in 2012 to 37% in 2015. The average number of decayed, missing and filled teeth for 5-year-olds in the district is 1.5 which is an improvement from nearly 2 in 2012; however we still need to reduce this average further.

"Bradford Council is responsible for oral health improvement and has invested in a number of evidence-based programmes under the banner of Building Brighter Smiles to reach young children in a variety of settings in their early years.

"Programmes include; nursery and school based tooth brushing programmes, Brushing for Life where health visitor teams support families with oral health advice and brushes and paste, community fluoride varnish programme and First Steps to Healthy Teeth which supports health promoting nurseries. In addition these programmes are supported by training initiatives to ensure parents, carers, education and health workers are aware of best practice for oral health.”

"The oral health of our children is everyone’s business and we all need to support measures that will help to keep young children free of tooth decay.”
