Lane rental schemes to launch across Leeds, Wakefield and Kirklees

Companies could be charged up to £2,500 a day for carrying out roadworks on key routes during the busiest periods under new schemes launching across three West Yorkshire council areas.

New lane rental schemes are set to be introduced across Leeds, Wakefield and Kirklees in an effort to reduce congestion and delays caused by roadworks.

Later this year, companies including utility providers and other organisations carrying out highway works could be charged as much as £2,500 per day if they operate on key routes during the busiest periods.

The schemes are designed to encourage organisations to schedule work outside peak times, coordinate with other companies and complete projects more efficiently.

Leeds, Wakefield and Kirklees councils have worked together to develop a consistent approach and have each received approval from the Department for Transport.

The three schemes will launch at the same time, making it easier for companies to apply for works and helping ensure consistency where disruption could affect roads across council boundaries.

Council leaders say the schemes should reduce delays, improve journey times and help protect important bus routes.

They are also expected to reduce carbon emissions by cutting congestion and unnecessary vehicle idling.

Councillor Peter Carlill, Leeds City Council’s executive member for transport and planning, said lane rental would give the authority more powers to encourage better planning and more efficient working.

He said coordinating the schemes across neighbouring council areas would provide a fair and consistent approach while recognising that roadworks in one area can affect surrounding communities.
