Initiatives in the Bradford district with the aim of improving educational outcomes and social mobility have been launched by a government minister on a working visit.
Nadhim Zahawi MP, Minister for Children and Families, visited the district in the month of the programme’s one-year anniversary, to see how Bradford Council’s Opportunity Area is being implemented.
At City Hall the minister launched ‘Evidence Active Schools’, a new campaign which it is claimed will see, by summer 2020, every Bradford school benefiting from learning and tools generated by investment in research.
Children and Families Minister Nadhim Zahawi said: “The Opportunity Area programme is truly unique – it’s led and driven by the people who know the area best, and understand what motivates and influences their young people. In my visits to many of these
Opportunity Areas – including Bradford today –I’ve seen for myself the passion and commitment of those involved, who are tackling deep-rooted issues like low confidence with reading and writing which hold people back from fulfilling their potential.
“This is just the beginning for this work in Bradford, and a chance to reflect on what we are doing to foster ambition in young people. Focusing on projects where we can make the greatest difference, our Opportunity Areas will help raise the aspirations and opportunities for Bradford’s children and young people.”
Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, Leader of Bradford Council, said: “We are pleased to welcome the Minister to Keighley and Bradford to share the fantastic work that is being led and funded by our Opportunity Area, and carried out to great effect by local people, local professionals and local partners.
“Our Opportunity Area is helping to open up Bradford district to draw on a whole world of leading talent, sharing innovative and effective home grown initiatives for the benefit of our young people.
“It is great to hear the Minister’s insights and commitment to our district. By working in partnership locally and with central government Bradford district can achieve great things for its children and young people.”
