Councillor Eddy Newman took up the chains of office as the new Lord Mayor of Manchester yesterday, 17 May.
Councillor Newman was first elected to the council in 1979 representing Blackley, and has served the Woodhouse Park ward since 2002.
As an MEP he led a campaign against the waste of 'Food Mountains', demanding that the food stored there should be distributed to the public. Later he became Chair of the European Parliament's Committee of Petitions.
A statement from Manchester City Council said: “His theme for his Mayoral year is to promote community cohesion and mutual respect amongst and between Manchester’s diverse communities and individuals”.
