Fifty Motorists Ticketed In School Parking Initiative

A total of 50 tickets have been issued to motorists for road traffic offences in Bradford District in the first phase of a crackdown on illegal and inconsiderate parking outside schools.

The initiative which began at the end of September, has seen police team up with primary schools and Bradford District Council following complaints from residents, parents and schools across the district.

In addition, three motorists were served with Section 59 warnings - which allow police to seize the vehicle if it is involved in further anti-social use - while one vehicle was seized for no insurance.

Four more schools have now signed up to the scheme in the run up to the school Christmas holidays and the operation is likely to continue into next year. Officers spend two weeks at each school. The first week sees motorists educated on the dangers of inconsiderate parking and why it is safer to park away from school grounds. Those who live a short distance away will also be advised on the health benefits of walking to school.

The second week focuses on enforcement and anyone who parks their vehicle illegally or inconsiderately is positively dealt with.

Further operations at the schools are also considered if the problems persist afterwards.

Sergeant Adrian Wright, who led the initiative at Bradford District, said:

"We are pleased with what has been achieved in the first phase and will be looking to build on that as we move towards Christmas."

"We hope that the motorists who we have spoken to, as well as others who may have seen our activities, are giving more thought to where they park when they pick up and drop off their children."

"Road safety measures such as zig-zags are there to keep school users safe and motorists should always avoid parking on these as they are likely to cause an obstruction. They should also avoid parking across people’s driveways and on the pavement."

"We will be continuing to monitor schools for parking problems and will take further action against those who continue to park inconsiderately or cause an obstruction."

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, (pictured) said:

"I am pleased to see the impact our work with West Yorkshire Police is having. Tackling irresponsible parking around schools is in everyone’s interest."

"Motorists parking illegally could be placing children in danger and cause needless inconvenience to local residents."

"People dropping their children off for school must park responsibly and we would encourage parents, where they can, to make the journey on foot."
