A couple have been fined for hygiene failures after inspectors found no soap, a dirty towel and an accumulation dirt and grease at a Lepton takeaway they ran last year.
Leeds Crown Court heard that at the time of the visit in October last year Zulfiqar Ali and Samina Akhtar were the owners of the New Paradise Indian takeaway in Highgate Lane.
The court heard that an environmental health officer found employees were not wearing appropriate clothing, hand washing was being done in the wrong sink, there was no soap, a dirty towel, the food thermometer was not working and there was a significant cleaning problem with dirt and grease of some age.
The premises were revisited on November 11 and although there had been some improvements not enough had been done to satisfy the officers. The decision to prosecute the couple was taken as there had been failings in the past to comply and heed past warnings.
Improvements have now been made and it is understood that their son is running the business.
61 year old Ali, of Greenhead Road, Huddersfield, was fined a total of £400 and his wife aged 57, of the same address, was fined a total of £260 after they admitted failing to put food and hygiene procedures in place and failure to comply with the improvement notice. The couple must also pay a total of £1,000 in costs.
