Community Banners Brighten Up Harehills Lane

Pupils from three local primary schools are helping to make Harehills even brighter by helping to design new banners for their local community.

The banners, which are now in place along Harehills Lane, were designed by school pupils from Hovingham, Harehills and Bankside Primary schools in Harehills working with East Street Arts. The pupils were given the task of creating designs which encourage community cohesion.

Representatives from the local community, including pupils from the schools and local ward members have been to the Compton Centre on Harehills Lane to see the new banners in place.

Councillor Lisa Mulherin, executive member for children and families said:

“It is fantastic that these pupils are taking an active part in helping to make their community a brighter and more pleasant place to live. Getting children and young people to take an interest their community at a young age will help them to become more engaged citizens when they grow up.”

Councillor Debra Coupar, executive member for communities said:

“We are very proud of Leeds multicultural society and these fantastic new banners with a theme of community cohesion helps to spread the word far and wide that everyone is welcome in Harehills.”

The banners, which have been funded as part of the council’s Town and District Centres regeneration programme, complement a series of improvements in Harehills including re-modelling Bellbrooke car park, and road safety improvements with more improvements planned.

Later this year a further launch is planned not only to introduce more banners but to reveal the results of a new project which is currently underway between the council and East Street Arts.

East St Arts is a contemporary arts organisation in Leeds, whose mission is to focus on the development of artists through an events programme, membership activities, professional development, studio provision and a programme of learning.
