Bradford councillor Kamran Hussain has been shortlisted for Community Champion at the 2025 LGIU & CCLA Cllr Awards — highlighting his significant impact across the district.
While councils nationwide celebrate their nominees for the 2025 Cllr Awards, it is Bradford’s Cllr Kamran Hussain who has emerged as one of the most influential figures on this year’s shortlist — recognised for work that has had a profound and measurable impact on communities across the district.
Cllr Hussain, of Bradford Metropolitan District Council, has been shortlisted for Community Champion of the Year, one of the awards’ most competitive and respected categories.
Now in their 16th year, the LGIU & CCLA Cllr Awards shine a spotlight on the critical role councillors play — often quietly and without recognition — to support residents, improve services and strengthen local democracy. With more than 400 nominations received across England, Wales and Scotland, competition this year was exceptionally strong.
A councillor turning policy into real-world impact
Unlike many nominees celebrated for individual projects, Cllr Kamran Hussain has been recognised for sustained, strategic and people-focused work across multiple areas, reflecting a deep commitment to improving life for Bradford residents.
His nomination highlights his leading role in shaping Bradford Council’s nationally recognised Community Cohesion Strategy — work that has gained attention far beyond the district.
From championing fair access to services, to fighting child poverty, to pushing for safer and more cohesive neighbourhoods, Cllr Hussain’s approach places the real needs of local people at the centre. He is widely credited with bridging the gap between policy and lived experience, ensuring that decisions made in council chambers lead to meaningful change on the ground.
The awards also feature young councillors shortlisted from councils in Milton Keynes (Cllr Shanika Mahendran) and Lambeth (Cllr John-Paul Ennis), recognised for their early-career contributions.
Celebrating the unsung heroes of local democracy
The LGIU says the calibre of nominees this year demonstrates the strength of leadership across local government. Senior judges will now review the shortlist ahead of the England & Wales winners announcement on 18 November at the Guildhall in London.
Jonathan Carr-West, Chief Executive of LGIU, praised the dedication of nominees nationwide, saying they “go the extra mile to improve their local area” and represent the very best of public service.
For Bradford residents, many will see Cllr Hussain’s recognition as well-deserved national acknowledgement of work that has already made a difference to thousands of people.
