Bradford Backs National Child Sexual Exploitation Day

Staff from Bradford Council will be raising awareness of Child Sexual Exploitation this week.

Friday, 18 March is National Child Sexual Exploitation Awareness Day which aims to highlight the issues surrounding CSE. It wants to encourage everyone to think, spot and speak out against abuse.

A week of Action against CSE starts in Keighley on Monday with activities taking place throughout the week in schools, Airedale Centre, Keighley and Keighley Campus of Leeds City College. The week in Keighley is being coordinated by KIVCA and Bradford Council. They will be working with a range of partners to make it easier for people to recognise, report and talk about child sexual exploitation.

On Friday, 18 March in Bradford staff from the CSE HUB will be in Centenary Square talking to young people and families to promote awareness of CSE. The mirror pool will also turn teal on Friday, the colour of the camapign ribbon.

Coun Ralph Berry, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Children's Services, said: "This is a chance to raise awareness of this dreadful crime. We have been working hard with partners to raise awarenss of this delporable crime and ensure that perpetrators are pursued and prosecuted.

"The safety of our young people is paramount and we will do all we can to protect them."

Superintendent Damien Miller of Bradford District Police, said: "We welcome and fully support this week of action by Bradford Council. Tackling CSE is the number one priority for police in Bradford District just as it is for officers across the rest of West Yorkshire.

"Police are securing significant convictions against those who think it is acceptable to abuse children in this way, as demonstrated by recent jailing of 12 men for a combined 130 years for child sexual exploitation in Keighley.

"We have also invested a significant number of additional officers and staff within our Protective Services team and five district safeguarding units to enable us to provide a high standard of service our children deserve.

"These specialist units work with local partners to manage all aspects of child protection. We have specifically dedicated officers and staff within these safeguarding hubs trained to deal with current and non-recent child sexual abuse cases including those defined as child sexual exploitation.

"I would also urge anyone who is a victim of CSE to contact the police via 101 and for parents and care workers to view our dedicated web page to help them recognise the indicators of child sexual exploitation at http://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/cse

"By working together with the public and our partners, we can raise awareness and close the net on those who commit these horrendous crimes."
