Consent Conversations Campaign Comes to Leeds Festival for First Time

West Yorkshire Police and Thames Valley Police will be working alongside partners and volunteers to run Consent Conversations at both Leeds and Reading Festivals.

The initiative forms part of the forces' work to tackle sexual offences and violence against women and girls, while helping young people better understand consent and challenge misconceptions.

The campaign was officially launched alongside campaigner and television personality Georgia Harrison at Reading Festival in 2024.

Police say more than 3,500 people took part in conversations about consent at Reading Festival last year.

Temporary Superintendent James Kitchen, West Yorkshire Police's strategic lead for Violence Against Women and Girls, said bringing the campaign to Leeds would provide an opportunity to engage directly with young people.

He said the initiative creates a space for “open, honest and judgment-free discussions about consent” and aims to prevent harm and challenge harmful behaviours.

Officers will use conversation prompts and informal discussions to explore what consent means, including the importance of recognising that consent is ongoing, can be conditional and can be withdrawn.

Consent Conversations tents will be located at both festivals, with visitors encouraged to stop by and speak to officers, partners and volunteers.

Police are also reminding anyone who has experienced sexual abuse, assault or harassment that they can report it by calling 101 or seek assistance through specialist support services.
