Man Sentenced to 25 Years After Attempted Murder of Woman in Leeds

A man who carried out a sustained attack on a woman in Leeds has been sentenced to 25 years, with police praising pub security staff whose intervention prevented her from being attacked further.

A man has been sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment after admitting the attempted murder of a woman in Leeds, with police praising security staff who intervened to protect her.

Ibrahim Albashir, 34, of no fixed abode, appeared at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday 25 August after pleading guilty to attempted murder.

He was also made subject to a hospital order and will be detained in hospital for as long as necessary. The court was told that if he is discharged, he will serve the remainder of his sentence in prison.

The attack happened shortly after 9pm on 17 March 2024, near a bus stop on Otley Road.

West Yorkshire Police said Albashir approached a woman who was alone and attacked her with a glass bottle.

Security staff from The Original Oak pub heard the woman's screams and rushed to help, stopping the attack and detaining Albashir until police arrived.

The victim, now aged 32, suffered injuries to her neck, chest, head and hands and was taken to hospital for immediate treatment.

Albashir was arrested at the scene.

Detective Inspector Richard James, of Leeds CID, praised the security staff for putting themselves at risk to protect the woman and providing first aid until paramedics arrived.

He said: “Without their actions, this could very easily have been a murder investigation.”

Police said the investigation had been treated with the utmost seriousness and stressed that violence against women and girls would not be tolerated.

The court found, following expert medical advice, that Albashir is suffering from a mental disorder and should receive treatment in a hospital setting.
