At Risk Women And Girls Focus For £48.5 Million Lottery Investment

Women and girls are at the heart of more than 60 projects across England which will support them to regain and retain control of their lives including £5,436,967 for six life changing projects across Yorkshire and Humber.

Funding is focused on not only providing help for women of all ages faced with extremely difficult situations such as stalking, sexual exploitation, violence against them but also in mentoring and connecting young girls with role models.

Together Womens Project in Sheffield are awarded £1,238,115 to support  vulnerable young girls at an early stage in their teenage years who may be at risk of falling into harmful behaviours. Consultation identified key triggers which start negative behaviour such as inter-generational impacts, poor health and poverty.

The girls will be reached through local schools, children’s and youth offending services and given tailored support including healthy relationships, power imbalances and positive sexual behaviours. The project is also conducting extensive consultations in Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford with over 262 girls by recruiting and training a group of diverse young people to conduct interviews and focus groups.

Leeds Women's Aid receives £2,022,528 to support the most vulnerable women and their children experiencing domestic violence. The project will recruit a team of complex case workers offering awareness and advice activities and a peer support group will be set up for women who have benefited from the project who want to give something back to help others.

The project will also establish a virtual women’s centre to provide a single point of information to enable women to access the support and services they need to be empowered to live safer, healthier lives.

The Big Lottery Fund is investing £45.5 million in 63 projects. A further £3 million will be invested in evaluating and learning including supporting the projects as they develop and then sharing details of the work of each so that other women and organisations can benefit in the future.

Geeta Gopalan, Big Lottery Fund England committee vice chair and chair of the funding panel for women and girls said: “Strong evidence from women and girls organisations told us of the increased demand for support, so we’ve been working closely with them over the past year to identify ways that women of all ages can get the right help, information and a listening ear to take control of their lives. We will be working closely with all the projects funded today to share the most successful aspects so that other women and girls can continue to benefit in the future.

“I am delighted that we can use money raised through National Lottery players to go back into the community and help young girls and women most in need.”
