A Huddersfield university student has been spared an immediate custodial sentence after hitting his sister-in-law with a baseball bat when his pregnant wife tried to leave him.
Leeds Crown Court heard Mohammed Usman Khan received a text message from his pregnant wife Hannah on November 20 last year saying she wanted to leave him.
The court was told when he returned to the family home in Tanhouse Street, Ravensthorpe, Dewsbury, he became angry and tried to prevent her leaving with her mother and sister.
The 21 year old picked up a baseball bat and threatened to smash up their car when they arrived.
Attempting to hit the car he struck his sister-in-law on the leg and in a further scuffle his wife was hit by a door.
Khan who admitted the assault charge and possessing an offensive weapon was given an eight month prison sentence suspended for 12 months with 20 activity days including a safer relationship course.
