Senior councillors in Leeds are to consider plans for a new community-led programme aimed at improving neighbourhoods and giving residents a greater say over priorities in their local area.
Plans for a new neighbourhood improvement programme covering all 33 wards in Leeds are to be considered by senior councillors next week.
The proposals would see council teams and local partners work directly with residents to identify priorities and deliver visible improvements in communities across the city.
Potential work could include street cleaning, clearing fly-tipped rubbish and removing graffiti, with residents helping to decide what matters most in their own neighbourhoods.
The plans will be considered by Leeds City Council’s executive board on Wednesday 16 September. If approved, the programme is expected to begin next month.
The council says the scheme would be based on a community-led approach, with residents helping shape local action plans and decisions alongside council services and partner organisations.
It would operate through four phases.
The first would involve creating detailed profiles of each ward and analysing existing provision.
The second would focus on community engagement and listening to residents of different ages to develop locally-led action plans.
The third phase would see coordinated improvement works carried out, supported by council teams and partner organisations.
The final phase would focus on maintaining improvements over the longer term and regularly reviewing progress and impact.
Council services expected to be involved include Housing Leeds, parks and green spaces, highways, waste management, public health, Active Leeds, community hubs, jobs and skills, volunteering and the Leeds Anti-Social Behaviour Team.
Partners would also include West Yorkshire Police, health organisations and third-sector groups.
The council says the wider aim is not only to make visible improvements to neighbourhoods, but also to help tackle inequality, improve health and strengthen communities across Leeds.
