A 36-year-old man has been convicted of raping a woman in the Hyde Park area of Leeds after a police investigation involving witness statements, CCTV footage and digital evidence.
Uvesh Vahora, of no fixed abode, was found guilty of one count of rape following a trial at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday, 3 November.
He has been remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced on Wednesday, 11 November.
Incident in Hyde Park
The offence took place at a property on Autumn Avenue in the Hyde Park area of Leeds on the night of 9 April 2026.
The incident prompted a public appeal from West Yorkshire Police at the time.
Following the attack, the victim was able to identify the property where the offence had taken place.
Vahora, who was living at the address at the time, was subsequently arrested.
The court heard that Vahora was in the United Kingdom as a student.
Arrest made within hours
Detective Inspector Tom Crosfill, who commented following the conviction, described the victim's experience as terrifying.
He said she had genuinely feared for her life during the incident.
After confiding in friends, the woman contacted police, who arrested Vahora approximately five hours after the offence.
He has remained in custody on remand since his arrest.
Police investigation secures conviction
Detectives gathered evidence throughout the investigation, including statements from the victim and witnesses, CCTV recordings and digital enquiries.
This evidence was presented during the trial at Leeds Crown Court, where the jury found Vahora guilty.
Detective Inspector Crosfill praised the courage involved in reporting such offences and emphasised the importance of supporting victims.
He said:
"I understand how incredibly difficult it can be to report rape and other sexual offences and I really hope that this conviction demonstrates how seriously an offence of this nature is treated from the outset."
He added that victims should feel confident that their reports will be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.
Sentencing scheduled
Vahora remains in custody ahead of sentencing at Leeds Crown Court on 11 November 2026.
West Yorkshire Police have reiterated their commitment to supporting victims of sexual offences and bringing offenders before the courts.
The conviction follows an investigation launched immediately after the woman reported the attack in April.
