A £1.1 million regeneration project will transform Morley town centre with improved public spaces, seating and accessibility. Work is expected to begin on 9 November.
Morley town centre is set to undergo a £1.1 million transformation, with major improvement works scheduled to begin on Monday, 9 November 2026.
The regeneration project, delivered through the Morley Town Deal and backed by Leeds City Council, aims to make the town centre more attractive, accessible and welcoming for residents, businesses and visitors.
The investment will focus on the pedestrianised section of Queen Street and Commercial Street, introducing improvements designed to encourage more people into the town centre and support local economic growth.
Construction company CR Reynolds Ltd has been appointed to deliver the scheme following a competitive tendering process.
Work is expected to be completed by March 2027.
New seating, planting and improved accessibility
The £1.1 million scheme will introduce a range of improvements to Morley's public spaces.
These include additional seating, new planting and changes designed to make the town centre easier and safer to navigate.
The improvements will focus on creating a more pleasant environment for shoppers and visitors while supporting local businesses and encouraging future investment.
Highway works on Commercial Street will also form part of the project.
The scheme is funded through the Government's Local Regeneration Funding programme as part of the wider Morley Town Deal.
Council welcomes long-awaited improvements
Councillor James Lewis, leader of Leeds City Council, welcomed the start of the project following years of planning and public consultation.
He said:
"The start of the public realm work in Morley town centre marks the culmination of years of planning and public consultation to deliver an improved town centre experience for all."
Councillor Lewis said the improvements would provide practical benefits as well as enhancing the appearance of the town centre.
He highlighted better accessibility and safety as key objectives.
More regeneration projects planned
The Queen Street and Commercial Street improvements form part of a wider programme of investment in Morley.
Leeds City Council has confirmed that three further schemes are scheduled for delivery over the next six months.
These will focus on Station Road, Queen Street North and Town Square.
The projects are intended to complement other regeneration initiatives, including work to rejuvenate Morley Town Hall and develop a new learning and skills centre.
Together, the investments aim to create new opportunities for education, employment and economic development.
Town centre businesses to remain open
Leeds City Council has reassured residents that Morley town centre will remain open throughout the construction period.
Shops, pubs, cafés, restaurants and other businesses will continue trading while the improvements take place.
The works have been carefully phased to minimise disruption, with signage and regular updates planned to help people navigate the affected areas.
The council and its contractor will also work closely with businesses to reduce the impact of construction wherever possible.
Residents urged to support local businesses
Gerald Jennings, chair of the Morley Town Deal, said the improvements would help deliver the programme's wider ambitions for the town.
He explained that the Town Deal was established to improve the town centre experience, create education and career opportunities and encourage economic growth.
He said:
"While there may be some temporary disruption during the work, I encourage everyone to continue to use the town centre as normal and support Morley's incredible range of local businesses in the usual way."
Mr Jennings said the public space improvements, alongside investment in the Town Hall and learning and skills centre, would help strengthen Morley's position as a place to live, work, learn and visit.
Part of wider South Leeds regeneration
The Morley Town Deal is one element of a broader programme of regeneration across South Leeds.
Other projects include the Elland Road masterplan and improvements around the Holbeck–Wortley Triangle.
The wider investment programme aims to improve connections between neighbourhoods, strengthen access to Leeds city centre and create long-term employment and training opportunities.
When will the work begin?
Expected start: Monday 9 November 2026
Target completion: March 2027
Locations: Queen Street and Commercial Street, Morley
Business access: Town centre remains open throughout
The council says the improvements will create a more attractive and accessible town centre while laying the foundations for further regeneration and economic growth.
