A florist in Wibsey, Bradford, has been targeted by a burglar just weeks after its new owner took over the business. Scentiments, on St Enoch's Road, suffered a smashed window and damage to its till during the early-hours break-in. Police are investigating and have collected evidence from the scene.
The new owner of a long-established Bradford flower shop has spoken of his disappointment after burglars targeted the business just weeks after he took over.
Scentiments, located on St Enoch's Road in Wibsey, was broken into during the early hours of Monday, 2 November.
The incident caused damage to the shop, with the owner revealing that the cost of repairs is likely to be greater than the amount of money stolen.
West Yorkshire Police have confirmed that the burglary is under investigation.
Window smashed during break-in
CCTV footage reportedly shows a man smashing a window to gain entry to the premises.
The owner believes a nearby stone was used to break the glass, while a knife may have been used to force open the till.
Speaking about the incident, he said:
"We're only a flower shop, but lo and behold someone has broken in."
He explained that the damage caused during the burglary was more significant than the amount taken from the till.
Police attended the premises following the break-in, collected fingerprints and received CCTV footage from the owner.
New owner took over just a month ago
The burglary has been particularly upsetting for the new owner, who took over Scentiments approximately a month ago.
The flower shop has been a familiar business in Wibsey for more than two decades.
According to the owner, his predecessor had operated the shop for 26 years without experiencing a similar incident.
The previous owner celebrated the business's 26th anniversary in August, thanking customers for their loyalty and wishing the new owner continued success.
The burglary has therefore come as an unwelcome setback during the early weeks of the shop's new chapter.
Determined to get business back to normal
Despite the damage and disruption, the owner has already taken steps to restore the premises.
The broken window, which was initially boarded up, has since been repaired, and the shop has been cleaned.
He is also considering additional security measures to prevent further incidents.
Speaking about moving forward, he said:
"I just want to get business back to normal."
The owner expressed frustration at having to deal with the incident so soon after taking over, but remains determined to continue operating the business.
Police investigation ongoing
West Yorkshire Police have confirmed that the burglary was reported and that enquiries remain ongoing.
CCTV footage has been provided to officers as part of the investigation.
The supplied report does not confirm whether any arrests have been made.
The incident has highlighted the difficulties faced by small independent businesses when criminal damage and theft lead to unexpected repair costs and disruption.
