A unique construction to limit motorway traffic noise is to be built on the M1 in West Yorkshire.
Highways England says the barrier, the first of its kind in the UK, will be put in place on a stretch of road close to Junction 39 in Wakefield.
Highways England project manager, Sujad Hussain, said: “The barrier can withstand the impact of a 13 tonne bus travelling at 40mph and shows a noise reduction of 37 decibels, a similar noise level to a refrigerator humming.
“This area of the M1 has been identified as a national hotspot by Defra in relation to noise.”
The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of February.
