A landlord who allowed tenants to live in slum conditions and at risk of being trapped by a fire has been fined £12,940 by Bradford Magistrates.
Hasan Kazi, 67, of Laisteridge Lane, was also told to pay £170 Victim Surcharge and costs to Bradford Council of £2,700.
The court heard that Kazi was the manager of a block of 11 flats at 61 – 63 Ashgrove, near Bradford University.
Prosecutor Syam Soni said that in July last year an Environmental Health Officer from Bradford Council inspected the property and found various defects. Ten of the flats were occupied at the time.
The officer found that the means of escape in case of fire were obstructed by large electrical appliances and general rubbish.
There were also numerous holes around the filthy property allowing pests to come and go.
After examining photographs of the conditions of the flats, the magistrates said that the property looked like a slum and the conditions were disgraceful.
