Greater Manchester Police say the incident happened on Princess Road and involved a car and a pedestrian.
Emergency services were called to the scene and the pedestrian was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Investigators are now working to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision and are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to get in touch.
Officers are particularly keen to hear from motorists who may have been in the area at the time and could have dashcam footage which may assist the investigation.
