Bradford man jailed after exceeding 100mph in police chase

A Bradford man has been jailed for dangerous driving after leading police on a car chase, exceeding speeds of 100 mph.

Mohammed Akhbar went the wrong way down Manchester Road, bounced over speed bumps, crossed the pavement and kept going on the wheel rim of his Honda Accord.

Throughout the pursuit, Akhbar narrowly missed a vehicle by a matter of inches and ran five red lights after initiating the pursuit on Shipley Airedale Road at 11.45pm on August 24 last year.

The court heard he first slowed down for the police patrol car when it pulled up alongside him, before suddenly speeding off on to Manchester Road, ignoring a No Entry sign and driving down the wrong side of the carriageway.

Akhtar punctured his front tyre bouncing over speed bumps and continued on the metal wheel rim when the tyre disintegrated.

He lost control of the vehicle on Girlington Road and hit two parked cars and was subsequently arrested, pleading guilty at the Bradford magistrates’ court to charges of dangerous driving and possession of six small bags of cannabis.

Akhbar had two previous convictions for dangerous driving and was sentenced to two years in prison.
