Bradford is counting down to the UCI 2019 Road World Championships coming to Yorkshire.
Bradford city centre will host the start of the Women's Elite Race on Saturday 28 September 2019 and the Men’s Elite Race will pass through Ilkley and Addingham on Sunday 29 September 2019.
To mark the 300 days to the start of the championships, cyclists from clubs across the Bradford district will take part in an event in the centre of Bradford on Tuesday 27 November. Cyclists from the University of Bradford, Queensbury Queens of the Mountain cycling club, Girls Gotta Ride club, Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure and cyclists from two local special schools as well as representatives of Bradford’s many other cycling clubs will ride in formation in the multi-award winning City Park.
They will be joined by women’s pro-cyclist Sophie Thackray, who is in the running to take part in the World Championships in both the Women’s Elite Road Race and the Women’s Junior Road Race next September.
Sophie, who lives in Eldwick and goes to Ilkley Grammar School, took part in this year’s Women’s Tour de Yorkshire race which finished at the iconic Cow and Calf Rocks in Ilkley. Sophie races in both cyclo-cross and road cycling for teams in national and continental class.
Coun Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said: “We are really excited for the UCI 2019 Road World Championships coming to the district next year. There is an awful lot of preparation to be done beforehand and officers from across the council are busy working with partners and local people.
“We are delighted that local cyclist Sophie Thackray will be able to join us to mark the start of the 300 days countdown to the World Championships and fingers crossed she will make the pro team and be at the start in Bradford city centre next year.”
