Vidya Balan is now part of the Indian censor board

As the news of the sacking of Pahlaj Nihalani, chairman of the Central Bureau of Film Certification (CBFC), unfolds, names of the new head and team have already emerged. Lyricist and adman Prasoon Joshi will be taking over as the new chairman, and joining him in his team is actress Vidya Balan.

"I am very happy to join the CBFC and I hope to fulfil my responsibilities as a member to the best of my abilities. I look forward to this new and exciting phase where our cinema will be allowed to reflect the sensibilities, realities and complexities of the society we are living in today," said Balan on being appointed a member of the new CBFC.

The other new members are actors Gautami Tadimalla, Vani Tripati Tikoo and Jeevitha Rajasekhar, author Narendra Kohli, directors Naresh Chandra Lal, TS Nagabharana and Vivek Agnihotri, musician Neil Herbert Nongkynrih, director of the National School of Drama Waman Kendre, activist Ramesh Patange, and writer Mihir Bhuta.

A press information bureau statement read, "The Central Government is pleased to reconstitute the existing Central Board of Film Certification with immediate effect for a period of three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier."

Vidya Balan made her debut in Hindi films with Pradeep Sarkar's Parineeta in 2005. She has been widely appreciated for her performance in films such as The Dirty Picture, Kahaani, Ishqiya and Paa.

She will be seen next in Suresh Triveni's Tumhari Sulu, which is slated to release on 1 December 2017.
