West Yorkshire Police have published statistics on the use of force by officers.
During the three-month period of 1 April 2017 – 30 June 2017 there was a total of 4173 incidents of force being used. In some instances, more than one type of force was used in order for the incident to be resolved.
The data is broken down by the different type of force used. It is the first time the data has been recorded and published in this way.
The most reported tactic to resolve an incident, at 30 per cent, was verbal communication. The second most used tactic, 28 per cent of all incidents, was handcuffing of a compliant individual, with noncompliant handcuffing being reported in 14 per cent of incidents of force used.
Taser was used on 62 occasions; however, it was only used in a firing capacity 10 times.
