Enhanced neighbourhood-based policing activity to help tackle the menace of knife crime is running this week in West Yorkshire.
The week of action, which started on Saturday 14th December, runs alongside existing police enforcement activity by Operation Jemlock – which continues to target serious violence and knife crime.
Since April, Operation Jemlock officers have made over 1,675 Arrests and seized 144 dangerous weapons from circulation.
The aim of the week of action is to deter people from carrying knives and other weapons in West Yorkshire and to continue the reductions that the operation has seen in serious violence and knife crime.
Superintendent Damon Solley, Violent Crime Reduction Lead for the Force, said: “In addition to the enforcement activity carried out by Operation Jemlock, making arrests, seizing weapons, carrying out stop searches, there are other actions designed to deter people from carrying weapons in public.
“We are deploying our knife arches in various locations around the force area to allow us to prevent people carrying knives in those locations.
“We are also working with locally based colleagues to carry out weapons sweeps in various locations in order to remove any knives or weapons placed or discarded for possible later use in crime.
“These tactics demonstrate that as well as taking action against those intent on violence and use of weapons, we are determined to try and dissuade people from taking up knives and carrying them in public in the first place.”
The operation is running throughout West Yorkshire with highly visible officers in key locations.
