Highways England claims roadworks carried out on West Yorkshire motorways will deliver big energy-saving results.
The organisation believes more than 700 tonnes of carbon a year, enough to power 20,000 homes, could be save in a national first project in which technology used for architectural ornamental lighting, such as monuments and halls, has been adapted for use on motorways and major A roads.
Works have taken place on the M62 near Huddersfield and Halifax, and the M621 near Leeds - replacing over 1,500 street lights with modern LED lighting units.
Highways England states the newly-installed LED lights require no routine maintenance, which means less disruption for drivers.
