Detectives are investigating after a man was shot in Leeds yesterday.
At about 6.25pm on Thursday (7/7), police were contacted by the ambulance service who had been called to a report of a man with gunshot injuries in Jackie Smart Court, Chapeltown.
Armed officers were sent to the scene to secure the 25-year-old victim who was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital by ambulance. He is in a stable condition and his injuries are not life threatening.
The incident is being treated as attempted murder and a scene is currently in place around Jackie Smart Court and in nearby Back Cowper Street where the shooting is believed to have happened. The scene is undergoing forensic examination.
Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Spencer, of West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: "Although the investigation is still at an early stage, we believe this has been a targeted attack on the victim. We are treating the incident as an attempted murder and are making extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances and progress the investigation. Two men, aged 20 and 30, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and are currently in custody.
"The victim has received very serious gunshot injuries and it is only through good fortune that those have not proved fatal.
"Clearly this is a serious incident and we would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information that could assist the investigation.
"Officers from the local neighbourhood policing team will be maintaining an increased presence in the area to reassure the community who will be understandably concerned by the criminal use of firearms on the streets."
Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team via 101 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
