An uninsured teenage driver, who was just 17 when he killed his 15 year old passenger whilst showing off, has been locked up in a young offenders’ institution for four years.
Bradford Crown Court heard that Syam Khan, fled the scene of the crash as 15-year-old Saliq Malik lay dying only coming back to retrieve his mobile phone.
The court was told that experts believed Khan who has never had a driving lesson or even held a provisional licence, was driving at twice the 30mph speed limit when he lost control of the Volkswagen Golf GTi smashing into the wall of St Clement’s Church in Gilpin Street, Barkerend, Bradford, at about 11am on September 12, 2014.
Front seat passenger Saliq Malik died in hospital from his injuries whilst back seat passenger Haris Khan, who was also 15, suffered a fractured pelvis and elbow in the accident.
Syam Khan, of Kimberley Street, Laisterdyke, Bradford, who had been convicted last month of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving, lied from the very beginning and continued to lie to the jury the court was told.
