Emergency laybys on the M62 are set to be painted orange, in order to make them easier for motorists to spot in case of a breakdown.
The refuge areas have already been implemented on a stretch of the road from Rothwell to Brighouse between junctions 25 and 30, where there is no hard shoulder.
This stretch of motorway, labelled the ‘smart motorway’, includes the painted laybys, as well as an emergency phone that stranded drivers can use to contact help.
The work to bring the attention-grabbing zones to the rest of the M62 will begin in October, with work being done overnight to minimise disruption.
Speaking on the introduction of the newly implemented painted laybys, Paul Unwin from Highways England said: "These redesigned emergency areas support our drive to improve awareness of smart motorway driving as part of our planned programme of work, including what to do in an emergency and when to use an emergency area.”
