Record Number of Manchester Schools Achieve Green Flag Status

A record 53 schools across Manchester achieved Green Flag status through the Eco-Schools programme during the 2025/26 academic year, marking the city’s most successful year so far.

A record number of Manchester schools have achieved Green Flag status through the Eco-Schools programme.

A total of 53 schools across the city received the award during the 2025/26 academic year, representing a 26% increase on the previous year.

The achievement reflects work by pupils, teachers and wider school communities to support environmental projects and help make Manchester cleaner and greener.

Schools from across the city came together at Wythenshawe Park in July to celebrate their success and take part in a range of nature-based activities.

The Eco-Schools network says its impact during the year included 2,600 people taking part in litter-related activities, 508 trees being planted, and 7,100 people participating in biodiversity-themed projects.

Schools also helped raise £92,300 for environmental charities.

More than half of Manchester’s Green Flag schools achieved the award with distinction, almost doubling the proportion recorded the previous year.

The Eco-Schools programme encourages young people to lead environmental projects in their schools and communities while developing practical sustainability skills.

Councillor Basat Sheikh, Manchester City Council’s Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, praised the commitment shown by pupils and teachers and said young people were helping drive environmental action across the city.

Manchester’s Eco-Schools officers Suzanne Vincent and B Guerriero said the results reflected the dedication of pupils, staff and school communities working to improve their local environment and tackle climate challenges.
