Teen Driver Sentenced After 90mph Police Chase Through Halifax Causes Over £10,000 Damage

A teenage driver who led police on a dangerous high-speed pursuit through Halifax, forcing pedestrians to jump out of his way and colliding with several vehicles, has been sentenced at Bradford Crown Court.

Adam Tanveer, of James Street, Masbrough, Rotherham, appeared before the court on 8 October 2026 after admitting dangerous driving and driving without insurance.

He received a 13-month detention sentence in a young offenders' institution, suspended for 18 months.

Tanveer was also ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and was disqualified from driving for two years.

Police pursuit reaches 90mph

The incident began when Tanveer was driving a white Audi Q2 along Pellon Lane in Halifax.

The vehicle was not insured for him to drive.

After encountering a marked police vehicle, Tanveer accelerated away, prompting officers to pursue him through the town.

During the chase, he reached speeds of up to 90mph, putting other road users and pedestrians at serious risk.

Pedestrians forced to jump out of the way

The pursuit continued into Shibden Park, where two pedestrians had to jump out of the vehicle's path to avoid being struck.

Tanveer continued driving dangerously and collided with a single-decker bus, tearing off its bumper.

The chase eventually ended when the Audi collided with a van and another Audi carrying a man and his daughter.

Despite the seriousness of the collisions and the danger posed to members of the public, nobody was injured.

The combined damage to the vehicles was estimated to exceed £10,000.

Police condemn dangerous driving

Sergeant Andrew Bingham, of Calderdale's Neighbourhood Impact Team, condemned Tanveer's actions and warned of the consequences of attempting to evade police.

He said:

"This is yet another example of an offender putting members of the public at significant risk simply to avoid taking responsibility for their actions."

Sergeant Bingham explained that several members of the public had suffered damage to their vehicles, resulting in inconvenience and significant financial costs.

He added:

"Our message is clear: stop before it's too late. A moment's decision to evade the police can have devastating consequences."

Commitment to safer roads

West Yorkshire Police reiterated its commitment to identifying dangerous drivers and bringing offenders before the courts.

Sergeant Bingham said officers would continue working to protect the public and make Halifax a safer place.

The case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of dangerous driving, particularly when motorists attempt to evade police.

Although nobody was physically injured during the pursuit, the incident resulted in substantial damage and placed several members of the public at risk.
