New Bradford Railway Station Planned at Interchange Site

Plans for a new railway station at Bradford Interchange have received backing from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), which says the development could strengthen transport connections, attract investment and support regeneration across Bradford city centre.

New Bradford Railway Station Planned at Interchange Site as Business Leaders Welcome Announcement

Plans for a new railway station at Bradford Interchange have been welcomed by business leaders, who believe the development could transform transport connections and help unlock investment across the city.

The announcement, made on Tuesday 20 October 2026, has received support from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), which says improved rail connections between Bradford and other major northern cities are essential for economic growth.

The proposed station would be located at the Bradford Interchange site, with business leaders highlighting its potential to support regeneration in the city centre and the Southern Gateway area.

Boost for Bradford's economy

Beckie Hart, CBI Regional Director for Yorkshire and Humber, said improved transport connections between Leeds, Manchester and York would help drive prosperity across the North.

She described the proposed station as an important opportunity for Bradford businesses.

"A new station at Bradford Interchange would be a crucial step – connecting brilliant businesses to key markets and a broader pool of skills and talent, while acting as a powerful catalyst for the regeneration of both Bradford city centre and the city's Southern Gateway."

The CBI believes improved transport infrastructure could make Bradford more attractive to businesses looking to invest, expand or recruit.

Better connections would also give employers access to a wider workforce while making it easier for people to travel between major economic centres.

Regeneration opportunities

The proposed development is being viewed as an opportunity to support the wider regeneration of Bradford.

The city's Southern Gateway has been identified by business leaders as an area that could benefit from improved transport infrastructure and increased investment.

A new station at the Interchange site could also strengthen Bradford's links with neighbouring cities and support the movement of workers, visitors and businesses across the region.

Business confidence and investment

Ms Hart said stronger regional economies were essential for improving business confidence and supporting national economic growth.

She added:

"Stronger regional economies are critical to building business confidence, unlocking vital investment and turning the Prime Minister's ambition for growth in every postcode into reality."

The CBI's response reflects the importance businesses place on reliable transport connections and infrastructure investment.

Raj Parmar, Managing Director of Sunrise Radio, said:

“Bradford has enormous potential, and better rail connectivity is essential if we're serious about attracting investment, creating opportunities and supporting local businesses.

“As a Bradford-based business, we see first-hand the talent, ambition and entrepreneurial spirit this city has to offer. A new railway station at Bradford Interchange could be a real turning point, not just for the city centre but for Bradford's wider economy.

“The announcement is welcome, but what matters now is turning these plans into reality. Bradford deserves a transport network that reflects its importance as one of the UK's major cities.”

What happens next?

The announcement marks a significant development for Bradford's transport ambitions.

However, the CBI statement does not specify a construction timetable, project budget or anticipated opening date.

Further details about the station's design, funding and delivery will be important in determining how the project progresses.
