Two Men Charged After Break-In at Keighley Café as Owner Praises Community Support
Two men have been charged with burglary following a reported break-in at an independent café in Keighley, which left its owner facing significant financial disruption.
The charges relate to an incident at the Endless Kettle Café on North Street, Keighley, on Sunday 18 October 2026.
Douglas Fryer, 54, of Greenfield Court, Keighley, and Anthony James, 58, of Allerton Road, Bradford, have both been charged with burglary.
Fryer is due to appear at Bradford Magistrates' Court on 3 December, while James is scheduled to appear before the same court on 2 December.
Café owner describes heartbreaking discovery
Café owner Michael Bawol said staff became aware of the incident after being contacted by police on Sunday morning.
The break-in came just hours after the premises had hosted a wedding celebration.
Mr Bawol said:
"The day before, we had been celebrating a wedding in that very space."
He described the contrast between the previous day's celebrations and the discovery the following morning as heartbreaking.
The café was unable to open on Sunday while forensic officers examined the premises.
As a result, several bookings had to be cancelled, including birthday celebrations.
Financial impact on independent business
Mr Bawol said the incident had placed additional financial pressure on the small independent café.
He explained that the business operates in a limited local market and does not have substantial financial reserves.
The owner expects the café to face financial consequences for several months as it recovers from the disruption.
The incident has also affected customers who had arranged celebrations and other bookings at the venue.
Community rallies around café
Despite the difficulties, Mr Bawol praised the response from Keighley residents and customers.
He said the café had received numerous supportive messages and offers of practical and financial assistance.
Some people had suggested setting up an online fundraising campaign to help the business recover.
However, Mr Bawol said the café had decided not to accept financial contributions.
Instead, he encouraged people to support the business by visiting when it reopens.
He said:
"I would much rather have a full café than a full account."
Café reopening today Thursday (22nd October 2026)
The Endless Kettle Café is due to reopen on Thursday 22 October, four days after the reported break-in.
The business hopes to welcome customers back and begin recovering from the disruption.
Meanwhile, the two men charged in connection with the incident are scheduled to appear at Bradford Magistrates' Court in December.
The charges remain allegations, and neither man has been convicted in relation to this incident.
