A 10-year-old girl from Old Trafford has been treated in hospital after liquid from a cracked glitter-filled phone case reportedly caused painful chemical burns to her stomach. Her mother is warning other parents about the potential dangers of similar products.
Girl, 10, Suffers Chemical Burns After £10 Glitter Phone Case Cracks in Old Trafford
A mother from Old Trafford has called for greater awareness of the dangers of liquid-filled phone cases after her 10-year-old daughter suffered painful burns when her £10 glitter case cracked and leaked onto her stomach.
Soraya Bourne was treated at Manchester Children's Hospital after the incident at her home earlier this month.
Her mother, Nikita Bourne, 27, said her daughter had been playing on her phone in her bedroom when the case cracked, allowing liquid to escape onto her midriff.
The child reportedly suffered severe chemical burns, leaving visible marks across her stomach.
The substance responsible has not yet been identified.
Mother describes daughter's distress
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Ms Bourne described the frightening moments when her daughter ran into her bedroom in severe pain.
She said:
"It was just awful. She ran in my room just screaming and screaming."
According to Ms Bourne, her daughter was initially unable to explain what had happened because of the pain.
The mother eventually noticed a small crack in the phone case and realised that liquid had escaped.
She said the damage was particularly alarming because only a small quantity of liquid appeared to have leaked.
£10 phone case bought from local shop
Ms Bourne said she purchased the liquid-filled iPhone case from a shop in Trafford for £10.
The case contained purple glitter suspended in liquid beneath its plastic surface.
Following the incident, Soraya was taken to the burns unit at Manchester Children's Hospital for treatment.
She has since been discharged but requires ongoing wound dressing and monitoring.
Her mother said doctors have not yet established whether the injuries will result in permanent scarring.
Concerns about long-term effects
Ms Bourne said her daughter continues to experience pain and that the incident has affected her confidence.
The family remains uncertain about how long Soraya will need treatment or whether further hospital visits will be necessary.
The mother has also expressed concern about other children using similar liquid-filled phone cases.
She believes the products should be recalled because of the potential risk if they crack or leak.
However, the exact chemical involved has not been confirmed, and the report does not establish that all products of this type present the same risk.
Shop owner responds
The owner of the Trafford shop where the case was reportedly purchased told the Manchester Evening News that he had been unaware of the incident.
He apologised and said he would stop selling the Chinese-made cases, which he said had been purchased from a legitimate supplier.
There is no indication in the report that the product has been formally recalled or that an official product safety investigation has reached any conclusions.
Parents urged to be aware of potential risks
The incident highlights concerns about liquid-filled phone accessories, particularly where damage to the casing could expose users to substances inside.
Parents may wish to check children's phone cases for cracks, leaks or other signs of damage.
If an unidentified liquid comes into contact with skin and causes burning, NHS guidance advises rinsing the affected area thoroughly with running water and seeking urgent medical assistance.
Soraya's family is now awaiting further information about her recovery and whether the injuries will leave lasting marks.
