Police museum awarded Hidden Gem accolade

    Greater Manchester Police Museum has been presented with a prestigious award.

    The attraction based in the former police station at Newton Street, Manchester was awarded the title of Hidden Gem by Visit England.

    It was presented with the award after being recognised for its outstanding attractions which create an enjoyable and memorable experience for visitors.

    Katie Henderson, museum officer the for Greater Manchester Police Museum said “We are delighted to be awarded the Hidden Gem accolade for the second time. Being recognised by Visit England further highlights the amazing work of our volunteers and staff and I hope it will encourage more visitors to discover what hidden gems they have in their own area.”

    Founded in 1981 at the former Newton Street Police Station, the museum not only collects and preserves archive material and objects relating to the history of policing in Greater Manchester, but acts as an important resource for community engagement.

    Visitors are given the opportunity to talk to staff and volunteers about policing and get involved with its history. It is also an important source of information about how policing came to be in its present format across Greater Manchester.
