Plans to improve the busy junction between Harrogate Road and New Line have been revealed by the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council (CBMDC). It is well known that the Harrogate Road / New Line junction is currently a bottleneck for motorists.
Harrogate Road is a key commuter route between Bradford, Rawdon and Harrogate, as well as being the primary access between Bradford and Leeds Bradford Airport. New Line is also a key route and provides access between Keighley, Shipley, Bingley and Leeds.
According to the Council the benefits of the scheme are clear; to reduce congestion, encourage sustainable modes of transport and to improve access to nearby transport hubs such as Leeds Bradford Airport and Apperley Bridge railway station.
These important improvement works serve to benefit commuters, local businesses, cyclists and pedestrians alike.
The Harrogate Road / New Line junction improvement scheme has received investment through the Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Growth Deal – a £1 billion package of government investment to accelerate growth and create jobs across Leeds City Region. This scheme was awarded funding in 2015. Alongside the funding from the Leeds City Region LEP Growth Deal, the scheme has also been funded by developer contributions.
The proposals to widen the road will reduce congestion and improve journey times, introduce right turn only lanes, implement new waiting restrictions to reduce congestion caused by parked vehicles and create specified cycle lanes. In addition, new traffic signals are being designed that will respond to changes in traffic flow to further improve the efficiency of the junction.
The scheme also aims to improve pedestrian experience in the area, and considers details such as tactile pavements and lowered kerbs to improve accessibility.
Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, portfolio holder for regeneration, planning and transport for CBMDC, said:
“On an average weekday, approximately 40,000 vehicles pass through this junction and road users often experience lengthy delays. This important highway scheme will improve the ability of the road network to accommodate the high volumes of traffic moving through this key strategic junction. The scheme is vital for local businesses and road users as it will improve accessibility to the local area due to the reduction in journey times.
We are keen to hear people’s views about the proposals being put forward. I would encourage stakeholders and members of the public to have their say.”
