A meeting of the Muslim Women’s Council was a scene of turmoil as Naz Shah, the MP for Bradford West before the dissolution of parliament, took a political stand and left the event last night, 17 May.
The event had received a tide of criticism from other candidates for the General Election because the Council had only invited two candidates to speak – Labour’s Ms Shah and the independent candidate Salma Yaqoob.
George Grant, the conservative candidate for the ward, was vocal prior to the meeting about not being offered a chair but was in attendance.
Ms Shah asked for Mr Grant to be offered a seat for reasons of equality and fairness and made a point of leaving when the offer was not made.
In a strange turn of events Mr Grant was then offered the seat and the opportunity to speak towards the end of the meeting.
