Murder Investigation Launched After Death Of Man

A murder investigation has been launched after a man has died in Ashton-under-Lyne.

Shortly before 10.50pm on Wednesday 27 July 2016 police were called to Warrington Street to a report of an assault.

Officers attended and discovered a man in his 40s who had suffered a number of injuries.

He was taken to hospital where he sadly died in the early hours of Thursday 28 July 2016.

A Home Office post-mortem examination and formal identification are yet to take place.

Parts of Ashton-under-Lyne’s town centre, including Warrington Street, are currently closed whilst officers carry out further enquiries.

Detective Superintendent Jonathan Chadwick, from GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “I would firstly like to pass on my condolences to the family of this man who will understandably be devastated by their loss.

“We are supporting them as best as we can at this time.

“Officers are currently working to establish exactly what happened last night and find those responsible for this attack.

“The investigation is in its early stages but we believe the attack started outside McDonalds on Warrington Street and may have involved a group of young men who had been in the restaurant earlier.

“We know there were people in the area at the time of this assault and I would appeal directly to them to come forward to police with any information they have, no matter how trivial they think it might be.

“Your information could prove vital for this investigation, so please call us.”
