More Than 100 Flights Delayed at Manchester Airport After Air Traffic Control Issue

Passengers faced major disruption at Manchester Airport yesterday after a technical issue with the UK’s air traffic control system delayed more than 100 departing flights and led to a number of cancellations.

Passengers at Manchester Airport faced major disruption yesterday after a technical problem with the UK’s air traffic control system affected flights across the country.

The National Air Traffic Service, NATS, reported an issue with its flight processing system at around 1.45pm yesterday afternoon.

At Manchester Airport, more than 100 departing flights were delayed, while more than a dozen others were cancelled.

Some passengers reported being left sitting on stationary aircraft for more than four hours before being told their flights had been cancelled.

One passenger, Andrea Kennedy, 70, from Heald Green in Stockport, had been due to travel on a Ryanair flight to Eindhoven.

She said passengers boarded at around 2.20pm for a scheduled 2.50pm departure but were later told there was a problem affecting air traffic control.

The aircraft reportedly taxied towards the runway before returning to the stand, with passengers eventually informed that the flight had been cancelled.

Disruption continued through the day as airlines worked to recover their schedules.

The problems at Manchester formed part of wider disruption affecting flights across the UK following the NATS technical issue.
