A prominent University of Leeds scientist has been awarded a grant worth almost £200,000 by research charity Breast Cancer Now to fund cutting-edge research that aims to stop breast cancer spreading to the brain.
The news comes on Secondary Breast Cancer Awareness Day, 13 October, as the charity announces more than £700,000 of funding across the UK for research specifically targeting secondary breast cancer – where the disease has spread to another part of the body.
With new funding, Dr Georgia Mavria – based at the University of Leeds – will now undertake a three-year project to uncover if levels of a molecule present in a patient could be used to predict whether breast cancer will spread to the brain.
