Calderdale Man Jailed for Historic Child Sex Offences

A 63-year-old man formerly from Halifax has been jailed for six years after being convicted of offences against a child committed more than 20 years ago.

A man formerly from Halifax has been jailed after being found guilty of child sex offences dating back more than two decades.

James Hartley, aged 63, formerly of Shaw Hill, Halifax, was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court to six years in prison.

The offences took place between 2004 and 2005, when the complainant was aged 14.

The complainant later came forward as an adult to report what had happened.

Hartley was convicted in June this year of three counts of sexual activity with a child following a trial at Bradford Crown Court.

He was also made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will remain on the sex offenders register for life.

Detective Constable Carly Hemingway, from Calderdale Child Vulnerability Exploitation Team, praised the complainant for the courage shown in reporting the offences and supporting the investigation.

She said the case demonstrated that the passage of time is not a barrier to investigating non-recent sexual offences and encouraged other victims to come forward.

Police say anyone reporting offences of this nature will be supported, listened to and treated with dignity throughout the process.
