Advertising A-Boards to Be Banned on Uxbridge Road in 12-Month Trial

Hammersmith and Fulham Council is introducing a temporary ban on advertising A-boards along part of Uxbridge Road from October, following concerns about pavement obstruction and accessibility.

Advertising A-boards are to be temporarily banned along part of Uxbridge Road in West London as part of a 12-month trial.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council says it has received concerns from residents about the use of the pavement signs, particularly along Uxbridge Road.

The trial is due to begin in October and will cover the route from the junction with Ariel Way to the border with Ealing.

The council says the scheme will help inform whether a similar restriction should eventually be introduced across the wider borough.

A-boards are commonly used by shops and businesses to advertise products and services, but concerns have been raised that they can obstruct pavements and create difficulties for pedestrians, particularly people who are blind or partially sighted.

Campaign group Fix Uxbridge Road has welcomed the move, arguing that high streets should remain accessible and easy to navigate.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council currently charges £275 a year for a highways licence allowing an A-board to be displayed.

However, a survey carried out in 2025 suggested there could be as many as 950 unlicensed A-boards across the borough.

Council officers said licences are often not applied for and that enforcement has generally focused on asking businesses to remove unauthorised boards rather than issuing fines.

The council says Uxbridge Road has generated a particularly high number of complaints, including concerns about accessibility and street clutter.

Further targeted engagement and enforcement activity is also planned.
