A driver has been convicted after a collision in June 2014 resulted in the death of a Leicester man.
A BMW 1 Series and a Ford Focus were being driven along Welford Road, Leicester, during the early hours of Sunday 15 June, 2014 when a collision occurred which resulted in the death of 39-year-old Jonilal Manjhu.
Kulwant Singh Rai, 48, of Northdene Road, Leicester was found guilty of death by dangerous driving after trial at Leicester Crown Court.
His co-defendant, Gurdip Rai, 35, of Brinsmead Road, Knighton, pleaded guilty to death by dangerous driving at a hearing in 2015.
The court heard that Kulwant Singh Rai was driving along Welford Road in his black BMW 1 Series and his nephew, Gurdip Rai was driving a Ford Focus, in which Jonilal was a passenger.
Both were driving at excessive speed in a 30mph zone and an eye witness stated the cars looked like they had been racing.
Jonilal died in hospital after the vehicle he was travelling in left the road and collided with a tree.
The court also heard that Gurdip Rai was one-and-a-half times over the drink drive limit and suffered serious leg injuries which resulting in one of his lower legs being amputated.
Detective Sergeant Mark Partridge from the regional serious collision investigation unit, said: “This incident has devastated many lives. Jonilal was a father of three young children when he lost his life in these very tragic circumstances.
“While we are pleased that two people have been convicted for their part in the collision, there are no winners in this case.
“We hope that if anything is to come from this case it’ll hopefully be that others will think before they decide to drive at excessive speeds. You are not only putting your life at risk but also the lives of other road users.
“We are constantly reiterating the dangers of both speeding and drink driving through our Fatal4 campaign, which highlights the four main causes of serious and fatal injury collisions, namely speeding, using mobile phones while driving, not wearing seatbelts and drink/drug driving.
“Fatal4 clinics are held across the city and county on a regular basis and have resulted in many drivers being stopped and reported for offences or educated on the manner of their driving, these operations will continue.”
