West Yorkshire Police is holding an event to celebrate the contribution of the Deaf community to society, and highlighting the need for fair and equal access to services.
The event is being held in Bradford at Trafalgar House Police Station on Wednesday, November 16, from 6pm until 8pm. It is an opportunity for members of the Deaf community to learn more about work ongoing with the community through the British Deaf Association (BDA) and British Sign Language (BSL) Charter work. They can meet and find out more about their local Police Deaf Champions, view BSL videos that have been produced by the Force and share their thoughts and ideas how West Yorkshire Police can work better to service the needs of the Deaf community.
Simon Phillips, Force lead for Deaf Community Engagement, said the previous two events which were held by the Force in support of International Week of the Deaf, were well attended.
"We were really encouraged by the amount of people who attended our two events, and in particular by the amount of support we received from the community. However, we were conscious that some people who live elsewhere in West Yorkshire were unable to attend."
"The event on November 16 is another opportunity for them to do so and is open to deaf people of all ages."
