Government figures show that deaf children in Yorkshire and the Humber are likely to fall a whole grade behind their peers in their GCSEs.
With thousands getting their results this week, the National Deaf Children’s Society is urging the Government, local authorities and health bodies to provide the support needed to close the GCSE attainment gap between deaf and hearing children.
The charity is particularly worried about deaf children in Bradford, following council proposals to charge schools for specialist support services. The charity says budgets are already so stretched that, without council funding, schools may be unable to provide support for the city’s 745 deaf children.
