A Charity established by former prime minister Gordon Brown now known as TheirWorld has a played a crucial part in saving a little girls life.
Catherine Smith's daughter Ella was born prematurely at 28 weeks. Ella weighed just 1lb 10oz and was about the size of an adult's hand. Ella remained in an incubator for several weeks.
Catherine said "I didn't really think there was that much chance of survival but Ella survived - thanks to a research centre set up by former prime minister Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah after the couple's 10-day-old baby, Jennifer, died in 2002.”
15 years later, the research and hard work done by the foundation saved baby Ella’s life.
