Throughout October, Bradford Council will mark Black History Month to help people learn more about the importance of black history and culture and how this needs to play a part in our society today
This year’s theme for Black History Month is “Proud to Be”.
Bradford Libraries will highlight books and resources for home and school, many of which are held with libraries across the district. Including those celebrating Black history makers, stories to enjoy and promote positive identity, links to materials and information to explore Black history. They have also highlighted booklists that offer further reading to celebrate Black lives and empower everyone to talk about diversity, prejudice, racism and Black History.
Bradford’s Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr Bev Mullaney along with Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe attended the Black History Month Flag Raising ceremony on Saturday, 2 October with the launch in City Hall.
There will be events from local organisations throughout the month and the Council will continue to share details of these events taking place in the district.
Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, Leader of Bradford Council, said: "It is so important that we are able to celebrate the diversity, heritage and culture of our African and African-Caribbean communities within the Bradford district during this month and it is important that we continue to encourage everyone to learn from the past and share experiences to help create a better future for all where inequality is a thing of the past. This year the theme is focusing on celebration and sharing pride in heritage and culture.”
Keep an eye on Council social media channels throughout the month where details of events taking place across the district will be shared
